Peter Wächtler (Germany, 1979) works with different mediums such as sculpture, drawing, animation, sound and video. His work is concerned with questions of genres (book illustrations, animated animals, depiction of nature) and alters their educational, empathic or oppressive aspects. The most reoccurring element is the use of text, be it voice-over, subtitle, song text or short story. These texts speak about social situations, hierachies and struggles, and are often distorted exagerations of love stories, historical dramas, horror scripts or coming-off-age legends. These personal reports can remain text, as well as they can conclude into a series of water colour drawings or ceramics or bronze sculptures instead. Wächtler moves within a strict system of associations, imagery and connotations to add other curves, lines and expressions to this given grid.
Peter Wächtler is a member of the artists’ platform Etablissement d‘en face in Brussels and co-founded the exhibition space Sotoso together with Hans-Christian Lotz in 2010.
